Sandy Fick, RN
Weight Management Nurse

It is difficult to be an overweight child in a society which focuses so much on appearance and achievement.  Being overweight not only increases health risks for heart disease and diabetes, few problems in childhood may have as significant an impact on childhood emotional development.  Kids have less energy, less fun, less self confidence, and less of a sense of well-being.

As Northwest Pediatric Center endeavors to provide healthcare for the children in our practice and our communities, the problem of childhood obesity has forced itself to the forefront of our thoughts simply by its alarming increase, prevalence and cost--both financially and emotionally--as well as the number of parents and children asking for help.

In response, we have developed a Weight Management Program that offers personalized intervention.

Sandy Fick, RN, our Weight Management Nurse, has received considerable training in Intuitive Eating Motivational Interviewing, a technique which honors and re-establishes the inborn boundaries each person has in order to help children become good eaters.  She is listed on the National Referral List of Intuitive Eating Counselors. Her focus is to help each family create a healthy relationship between food, mind, and body.

What to expect when you participate in our Weight Management Program:

  • You will never be given a diet for your child
  • You will learn the importance of feeding your child well and be given tools to help you accomplish that goal
  • You will learn what your family is doing right and see opportunities to help you, your child, and your family to become healthier, more active, and more fit
  • You will have the opportunity to participate in classes that teach healthy food preparation on a budget
As part of our Weight Management initiative, we are partnering with a local organic farm, Blue Earth Farms, 7 miles east of Chehalis on Jackson Highway. Blue Earth Farms provides children's educational workshops, classes, and fun adventures focusing on organic farming, healthy lifestyles and land stewardship.
